Raider Men’s Basketball update

Filed under: Men's Basketball — duncan stevenson at 9:12 am

Two weeks into the 2012 league season, the Raider Men’s Basketball team has proven to be better on the road, than they are at home.  Five games into the 16 West Region schedule, the Raiders own a 3-2 record (11-5 overall).  Their three wins have been earned away from the comfy confines of the HEC, while their 2 losses have come in front of the home crowd.

Coming off of an impressive 8-3 preseason, the Raiders opened league play on the road against Grays Harbor.  The Raiders had little trouble with the Chokers, posting a 83-59 victory.  Freshman standout John Palmer led the way with 22 points, on 9 of 12 (75%)shooting from the field.  Marquise Doss added 12 points and a team high 7 rebounds, with Chris Hyslop and Brett Skogstad chipping in with 10 points apiece.  Hyslop also grabbed 7 boards.

The Raiders home opener brought crosstown rival Tacoma CC to the HEC.  Before a record crowd, estimated at 650, the Raiders suffered a 79-62 loss at the hands of the 6th ranked Titans.  The Raiders struggled to score during two stretches, one in each half, and weren’t able to overcome a talented Titans squad.  John Palmer tallied 18 points to lead the Raiders, including going 7-7 from the line.  Dan DeVries and James Cooks added 8 points each in the losing effort.  Attendance set a record for the Raiders home court at the HEC, in it’s five year history.

On the road against the always pesky Centralia Trailblazers proved to be a good test for the Raiders, as Pierce pulled out a 67-64 win.  John Palmer once again led the way as the Raiders had a balanced offensive effort.   Palmer and Chris Hyslop tossed in 15 points apiece, with Patrick Cooks, Derek Porter, and Brett Skogstad chipping in with 8 points each.

A season best defensive effort against the always tough Highline Thunderbirds at the ThunderDome earned the Raiders an impressive 60-47, and their third win of the young season.  The Raiders held the T-Birds big man, 6′-10″ Nkosi Ali (averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds per game), to just 6 points and 6 boards.  Dan DeVries led Pierce with 19 points and 7 rebounds.  John Palmer added 15 points, and Colton Brown came off the bench to tally 10 points and grab a team high 9 rebounds.  Marquise Doss led the defense with 8 steals and hit the glass for 9 boards.

The Clippers from South Puget Sound came to town and left with a 73-72 win over the Raiders.  Pierce couldn’t find their rhthym for most of the game, and played from behind for much of the first half, training by 9 at the break.  Trailing by 1 with under a minute to play, John Palmer was fouled following a steal from SPS, and converted on both free throw attempts, giving the Raiders a 1-point lead with 31 seconds remaining.  The Clippers scored with 17 seconds to go to re-take the lead.  Colton Brown followed a missed 3-point attempt by Dan DeVries with 2 seconds, but couldn’t get the put-back shot to drop.  Palmer led the way with 17 points, 9 steals and 5 assists.  Marquise Doss led three other Raiders in double figures (15 points), with DeVries adding 14, and Brett Skogstad with 11.

Raider Women top Tacoma

Filed under: Women's Basketball — duncan stevenson at 10:25 pm

Kawehi Hagi’s (FR. Kapolei, HI) game high 25-points help lead the Raiders past Tacoma claiming the 73-59 victory. The Raiders improved to 2-0 in Western Region play and 8-4 overall while Tacoma fell to 0-1 and 3-7 respectively.

Hagi seemed to struggle from the floor shooting 5-for-19 but she was able to get to the basket at will although having difficulty finishing
at the rim. In a zone at the free-throw line Hagi made 14 of her 15 attempted free throws to go along with her eight rebounds, four assist and two steals.  Hagi scored 16 of her 25 points in a scoring flurry during the opening minutes of the half.

The Raiders had their fab- four in double digit scoring yet again this season and Taylor Riley (SO. Kent, WA) notched another double-double.  Riley had 15-points on 6-for-12 shooting and grabbed 11 boards.  Unique Taufa’asau inked her second double-double of the season snatching 12 rebounds and shipping in 13-points.  Hayley Hancock (SO. Eatonville, WA) continues to play string music with the nets draining 3-of-8 three pointers for 13-points and has made a Western Region league best 30 threes on the season.

Going into halftime the score was tied at 30-30. This game seemed as if it was going to come down to the wire but the Raiders as usual ignited a fierce comeback scoring on nine of their first 10 possessions of the half and never looked back. The Raiders forced 30 Titan turnovers scoring 39-points off those miscues.

“We came into the game not focused and too relaxed allowing Tacoma to stay in the game. It was a very close game to start but shouldn’t have been. We didn’t execute our plays very well and went away from our game plan. We picked up our tempo in the second half and played our game” said Hagi.

Raider Women defeat Grays Harbor in league opener

Filed under: Women's Basketball — duncan stevenson at 6:41 pm

The Lady Raiders traveled to Grays Harbor College to take on the Chokers in the first league game of the season.  A year ago this story would have been different! Suffering through a sluggish start last season the Raiders lost to the Chokers which proved to be detrimental to the success of the team who narrowly missed play offs by one game. So, one might say the Lady Raiders had a score to settle having handed the Chokers their only victory that entire season besides two forfeited wins! The Raiders played with a vengeance and were determined to not be put in the same position this season and seem to be in complete control of their own destiny!

The Raiders got off to a slow start shooting a bleak 21% from the field and 13% from beyond the arc and history was deemed to repeat itself.  Pierce went into half time with an unconvincing four-point lead.  But, the Raiders came out of the gates running in the second half cruising to their first league win claiming a 30 point victory over the Chokers. Ignited by a stifling defense and fueled by a solid offensive effort the Raiders outscored the Chokers by 26 points in the 2nd half.  The Raiders improved to 7-4 and 1-0 in Western Region play while the Chokers fell to 3-7 and 0-1 respectively.

The Raiders had three players in double digits. Leading the way was sophomore, Taylor Riley (Kent, WA) leading all scorers with 28-points while shooting an impressive 52% from the field and snatching 11 rebounds icing her 7th double-double of the season! After being named Decembers Athlete of the Month, Riley continues to showcase her talent as an elite player. Hayley Hancock (SO, Eatonville, WA), proved her ability to put up numbers as well shooting 6-of-14 from the field knocking down 4 three-pointers tallying 17 points on the night.  Also in double digits was Unique Taufa’asau (SO, Federal Way, WA).  Taufa’asau had 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

John is a great, hustling, scoring point guard for the Raiders and one of our two captains. The Raiders will be looking for this heady guard to get them off to a great start as league games begin. Best of luck to John Palmer and the rest of the Raiders as they begin their quest back to the NWAACC Championships.”
