Freshman midfielder Matt Solis scored two goals in the first seven minutes of Thursday’s cross-region match against the Cardinals of Skagit Valley, to help his Raider teammates get out to an early lead, and eventually coasting to a 5-3 victory. Solis completed the hat trick, scoring his third goal of match in the 59th minute of the second half. Sophomore Tommy Finseth scored his second goal of the season as the first half drew to a close, posting Pierce to a 3-1 lead at the break. Skagit Valley pulled with one score, at 4-3, late in the game, but Jay Williams put the icing on the Raiders win with a goal in the 90th minute of the contest.
Dylan Riley, Jonathan Rodriguez, and Jay Williams, each picked up assists on Solis’s scoring barrage, while Tyler Himmelberger (Finseth), and Joel Carillo (Williams), also tallied assists. The win pushes the Raiders back into second place in the NWAACC’s Southern Division, improving their record to 3-2-0 (5-5-0 overall), just one point ahead of 3rd place Chemeketa.
Solis’s feat marked the second time this season that a Raider has scored 3 goals in a game — teammate Jay Williams netted 3 goals against Columbia Basin earlier in the month. Solis leads the Raiders with 8 goals on the season, and is tied for second place in the NWAACC for most goals scored.
Pierce has the weekend off, and will get ready for a busy week at home, when they host division leading and #4 ranked Clark College on Wednesday, October 3, starting at 4:00 p.m.. The Raiders will be back on the pitch at Heritage Recreation Center on Saturday, October 6, when they host cross-region rival Whatcom Community College (2:00 p.m.).
