In a high scoring game against Grays Harbor Wednesday night, the Lady Raiders (5-7 overall and 1-0 in league) emerged victorious in their regular season home opener. Led by five starters in double digit scoring, the Raiders outscored the Chokers 106-67.
It was a very balanced team victory. Leading all scorers with 26-points was Carli Elwin (SO. Bonney Lake, WA). Elwin seemed to be off to a slow night going just 3-for-11 in the first half but continued to run the floor and get open looks. Elwin shot 5-7 in the second half including 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. Point guard Alyssa Simonson (FR. Covington, WA) had an impressive night shooting lights out going 8-for-13 from the field (62%) including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc icing a double-double with 18-points and 10 steals in addition to her six assists and five rebounds.
Simonson is currently leading the NWAACC (Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) in steals with 53 prior to Wednesdays contest. The two closest players to her are teammates Elwin and Kawehi Hagi (SO. Kapolei, HI). Elwin and Hagi have 49 and 44 steals respectively. The next closest player not wearing a Raider jersey is at 35 steals. As a whole, the Raiders defense forced 45 turnovers and have amassed 207 steals on the season averaging almost four more steals per game than any other team on the season.
Freshman Alexa Goodenow (FR. University Place, WA) chipped in 19-points of her own to go along with her three assists and four steals. Her forward counterpart, Mackenzie Lancaster (FR. Puyallup, WA) had 14-points, seven rebounds and three steals. Also in double digits for the raiders was Hagi. Hagi scored 13-points and was one assist away from notching yet another double-double in her career. Hagi finished with nine assist, six steals and 4 rebounds.
The Raiders scored 60-points in the first half and had a comfortable 29-point lead going in to the locker room. This allowed for a collective effort with all 12 players on the roster seeing ample time on the floor. Reserve Tamar Rodrigues (FR. Kapolei, HI) had four rebounds, two blocked shots, three assists and three steals. Terra McGinn chipped in 5 points and six rebounds in eleven minutes of play.
The Raiders head to Tacoma Saturday, January 5, 2013 to take on the Titans in this cross town rivalry. Tip-Off scheduled for 3:00 pm. The Titans are currently 4-4 on the season.
