The Veterinary Technician is the veterinarian’s primary medical support.  They aid the veterinarians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail.  They have a very significant role in communicating with and educating clients about their pets.



Works under the direct supervision of the lead technician (Tier 3) and/or practice Manager

Provide compassionate care to patients and clients.

Prepare and maintain the exam rooms and treatment areas.

Keep accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy.

Admit patients following hospital policy and doctors written orders.

Effectively restrain pets.

Understand all common vaccines and vaccination protocols and able to explain to clients.

Gives SQ, IM, and IV injections.

Prepare and communicate effectively treatment plans as outlined by doctor and discuss financial commitments with clients while supporting hospital financial policies.

Handle client’s medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarians when appropriate.

Assist the veterinarian in medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepare patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery, administers fluids.

Properly care for all surgical and treatment materials and equipment as well as keeping those areas stocked and cleaned.

Perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that results are recorded in patient records.

Effectively position for and take radiographs.

Place IV catheters and properly care for them. 

Know common disease states and alert veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with hospitalized patients.

Understand usage, dosage, and common side effects for commonly used prescription drugs and readily explain them to clients.

Discharge patients based on the veterinarian’s orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state, and explain necessary follow up and home care instructions.

Maintain an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.

Conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks.

Maintain a positive, cooperative relationship with other employees.

Understand the importance of a clean and orderly facility, and clean, do laundry, and organize as part of a normal job duty.

Perform other duties as assigned by manager or veterinarian.



Exhibit strong problem solving and an organized approach to the position.

Possession of strong organizational skills.

Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.

Excellent verbal communication skills.

Knowledge of the spelling and meaning of commonly used terminology of veterinary medicine.

Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.

Knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in the variety of treatments to make preparations and provide assistance to veterinarian and technician.

If you are looking for a unique, part time position that keeps you in the veterinary field without taking over your life, we want you!

We are looking for one or two qualified candidates to fill open position(s) at the Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center. This individual or individuals should be very experienced handling cats, able to perform diagnostic urinalysis, blood pressures, and subcutaneous injections as well as lift up to 40 lbs. Duties include (but are not limited to) feline husbandry, answering phones, setting appointments, performing injections.  We are seeking an extremely qualified veterinary assistant, or a licensed veterinary technician– or both depending on individual availability.

This/these are unique part time positions with the potential to become temporary full time as well as fill in work as needed. The position(s) are being created due to an employee who is pregnant and one who is moving. We will hire one or two individuals, depending on personal availability to fill our needs. These hours could and will expand to temporary full time, especially in December 2017 to April 2018, then return to part time.

If available, you may also be asked to fill in on occasion, and therefore we would require you to be fully trained in all aspects of our clinic.

Current position (can be split amongst two people):

Tuesday’s: A licensed technician or highly skilled veterinary assistant would be required to administer subcutaneous injections on 3 to 4 Tuesdays per month. Usually arriving around 4 pm and staying until 6 pm depending on how many patients are in hospital.

Wednesday through Saturday: (three to four weeks per month with one week off monthly), 2 to 3 hours in the morning and approximately 1 to 2 hours in the evening. If there were cats present. Sunday would be the same (If cats are present), along with various light janitorial duties and scheduled discharges.

In the event there are no cats present and on non-treatment weeks, there would be no need for coverage.

Schedules for non-treatment weeks are provided 2 or more months in advance for planning purposes.
