Nursing lab takes the name of program founder
On Nov. 3, past and present Pierce College employees and friends came to honor Dr. Joane Moceri for the dedication of the Dr. Joane T. Moceri Nursing Skills Lab in the new Arts and Allied Health building at Pierce College Puyallup.
The naming dedication was a surprise from Moceri’s husband, Steve Moceri, who wished to honor her work as founder of the nursing program at Pierce College. The dedication was the result of a significant naming gift to the 21st Century Learning Campaign.
Joane came to Pierce College in 2004 after a chance conversation at Starbucks with Steve Wall, then chancellor of the district. She encouraged Steve to consider starting a nursing program. At the time, it seemed unlikely, but it wouldn’t be for long. When a nursing program became possible, Steve turned to Joane to shepherd the program from its beginnings through accreditation.
Joane is now an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Washington Tacoma, but her ties to Pierce College are ongoing. Joane has served as chair of the Nursing Advisory Committee for several years and her husband, Steve, is a former member of the Pierce College Foundation board.
“It was such an honor to celebrate the hard work and dedication of Joane Moceri, while in turn, the Moceri family celebrated Pierce College with such a generous gift,” said Suzy Ames, vice president of advancement and executive director of the Foundation.
