Parents and toddlers, register now for fall preschool at Pierce
Pierce College Fort Steilacoom’s cooperative preschool is now enrolling children ages 18 to 36 months for its fall Parent and Child class.
In this unique program, parents attend class with their children, exploring a wide range of topics, including nutrition, guidance, and child development. This approach allows parents to learn firsthand how best to teach and care for their child, build relationships with other parents, and earn two college credits.
“The parent education instructor and other parents in the class provide parents a network of resources and support,” explained Greg Brazell, Pierce College early education teacher. “At the same time, children are working in a developmentally appropriate preschool, exploring their world and developing physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Each environment is designed to capture the child’s interest and help their development in each area.”
Starting Sept. 28, the Parent and Child preschool class (Early Childhood Education 147) meets from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom. A snack is provided and children participate in a structured music time during each session. Cost is $66.50 (includes tuition and lab fee) and $26 for registration. Enrollment is capped at 12 students, so interested parents are encouraged to reserve their child’s spot immediately.
Pierce College’s parent co-op preschool has been operating for more than 35 years, providing critical support and care to thousands of families in Pierce County. For more information or to reserve a spot, call (253) 964-6691.
Get kids moving at the Pierce Youth Movement summer camp Aug. 15-18
The Pierce Youth Movement is coming!
Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are invited to Pierce College Fort Steilacoom for a free summer camp devoted to health, wellness, and having fun. Activities will include games, sports, a visit from Rhubarb, mascot for the Tacoma Rainiers, yoga and weight training classes, and much, much more.
“We want to offer kids four days of fun packed with games, activities, and a sneaky bit of learning tossed in to carry them through the rest of their lives,” said Professor Lisa Murray, one of the camp organizers. “They’ll remember all the fun they had, but they’ll also be learning how to take care of their bodies with good nutrition, fitness, and stress management.”
The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 15-18 at Pierce’s Health Education Center, 9401 Farwest Dr. SW, Lakewood. Space is limited, so parents are encouraged to sign up their children early. Registration is available online. A camp T-shirt and daily lunches and snacks will be provided. Campers are asked to dress in athletic clothing and shoes (closed-toe, no sandals) and bring a bottle of water.
The Pierce Youth Movement is hosted by the Pierce College Diagnostic Health and Fitness Technician program, a vocational program that prepares adults to work as personal trainers. Students are given a strong background in exercise, nutrition, and general wellness, information they will share with the campers, said Murray.
For more information, contact Murray by phone at (253) 964-6482 or by email at lmurray@pierce.ctc.edu.
