Houndsonthehill-poster

Leave the books and backpacks at home and watch Pierce College Puyallup go to the dogs Saturday, Aug. 25, at the first Hounds on the Hill event.  It’s a fun opportunity to enjoy a community fair filled with dog-themed events, booths and sponsors – all highlighted by a 2.4-mile walk around Bradley Lake Park with your four-legged friend.

The day’s festivities kick off with the walk at 9 a.m. (registration starts at 8 a.m.) from Pierce College Puyallup’s Health Education Center and looping around the park. Afterward, families can spend the day enjoying dog-themed activities, including K-9 demonstrations from the Air Force, Pierce County Sheriff, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection; 4-H dog obedience demonstrations; agility demonstrations; a 20-yard doggie dash; a variety of contests; and more. The street fair wraps up at 3 p.m.

Owners will also have the opportunity to hear from veterinary experts. Presentation topics include canine preventative health and oral care, common household toxicities and poisons, exercises for the older dog, and preventing, identifying, and treating heat stroke.

Pre-registration for the walk may be done online, and includes a t-shirt for the dog owner and a bandanna for the pup. Registration ranges from $15 to $20.  There is no cost to attend the street fair.  Additional details and a full schedule of events may be found at www.houndsonthehill.org.

Hounds on the Hill is a partnership between the Pierce College Foundation and the Rotary of South Hill Puyallup.

The South Hill Rotary supports many causes in the community, including academic scholarships for local graduating high school seniors and Pierce College students, and transitional housing for local homeless families. The Pierce College Foundation is the non-profit organization that supports Pierce College, raising money for high-tech learning equipment, scholarships and professional development for faculty and staff.  Proceeds from the event support both organizations.

A quick guide for protecting yourself

In light of the recent tragedy in Colorado, Campus Safety is reminding everyone of life-saving actions that may help in the event of an armed intruder on campus. If an armed intruder comes on to Pierce College property, it is very important that you take action to protect yourself, contact 911 and then Campus Safety. Pierce College Campus Safety recommends the following response.

Running

If you believe you can safely make it out of the area, do so. If you decide to run, attempt to keep objects (columns, walls, trees, vehicles, trash cans, etc.) between you and the armed intruder. Once you’re away from immediate danger, summon help and warn others.

If you see an armed intruder and you are in an office or classroom:

1. If you cannot escape safely, remain in the classroom or office, immediately lock and barricade the door(s) by moving any available items (heavy desks, file cabinets, equipment tables etc.) in front of the door.

If the door is not lockable, find an alternative way to keep the door closed, and barricade the door.

2. Turn off all audio and video equipment. Close blinds and curtains, if possible.

3. Stay out of sight and be as quiet as possible.

4. Call 9-911.

o Alert dispatch of your specific location: City, Pierce College Site, Address,  Building, and Room Number

o Be prepared to provide an accurate description of the person or person(s). Note height, weight, gender, hair color, type and color of clothing, and any other characteristics or physical items that are unique to the individual(s).

o Report the type of weapon (if known) and direction of travel or building entered.

5. Call Pierce College Campus Safety and report the above information after notifying 911.

6. Keep the classroom or office secure until police or Campus Safety arrive and give further directions.

If you are caught in an open or exposed area and you cannot get into a classroom or office, you must decide upon a course of action.

Running

If you believe you can safely make it out of the area, do so. If you decide to run, attempt to keep objects (columns, walls, trees, vehicles, trash cans, etc.) between you and the armed intruder. When away from immediate danger, summon help and warn others.

Hiding

Look for a safe hiding area where you are not visible. Once in place, remain calm and quiet. Stay hidden until you can make contact with emergency personnel, or until you can safely evacuate the area. (NOTE: The duck and cover response used in earthquakes is not an effective method of hiding from an armed intruder.)

Playing Dead

Playing dead does not always fool the intruder and is not recommended by our local law enforcement agencies.

Fighting Back

If you are caught in the open and are in close proximity to the intruder, the best option is to fight back. This response may be dangerous, however, it could be your best option in a life or death situation.

o Fight dirty. Do whatever you need to impair or subdue the intruder. Pick up and throw items at the intruder and/or wield any heavy object that is close at hand.

o Aim for sensitive spots. Poke the intruder in the eyes; hit or kick the groin, nose, throat, or kidneys; scrape your foot hard against their shin; stomp on the top of their foot with your heel, or stomp out sideways into their knee. Effective weapons include your elbows, the heel of the palm, and your forehead (attack the intruder’s face like heading a soccer ball). Your closed fist can be effectively used like a hammer, especially against the intruder’s neck, nose, and ears, but don’t throw punches – without training, you’re more likely to break your hand than hurt the intruder.

o Do the windmill. If the intruder grabs you or attempts to grab you, swing your arms wildly. This will make it difficult for them to maintain a hold on you.

If you are caught by the intruder and you are not going to fight back, avoid eye contact, do not make any sudden moves or gestures and make every effort to remain calm.

Once emergency personnel have arrived and taken over the situation, obey all commands.

Fall preschool classes now enrolling infants and toddlers

Parents and children learn together in Pierce's preschool classes.

Parents and children learn together in Pierce’s preschool classes.

Pierce College Fort Steilacoom’s cooperative preschool is now enrolling children ages 18 to 36 months for its fall Parent and Child class.

In this unique program, parents attend class with their children, exploring a wide range of topics, including nutrition, guidance, and child development. This approach allows parents to learn firsthand how best to teach and care for their child, build relationships with other parents, and earn two college credits.

The parent education instructor and other parents in the class provide parents a network of resources and support. At the same time, children are working in a developmentally appropriate preschool, exploring their world and developing physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Each environment is designed to capture the child’s interest and help their development in each area.

Starting Oct. 3, the Parent and Child preschool class (Early Childhood Education 141) meets from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom. A snack is provided and children participate in a structured music time during each session. Cost is $66.50 (includes tuition and lab fee) and $28 for registration. Enrollment is capped at 12 students, so interested parents are encouraged to reserve their child’s spot immediately.

Pierce College’s parent co-op preschool has been operating for more than 35 years, providing critical support and care to thousands of families in Pierce County. For more information or to reserve a spot, call (253) 964-6691.
